Productions that move smoothly in Dubai aren't lucky. They have a week of pre-production behind them that most first-time visitors underestimate.
One week out. Confirm customs clearance for any inbound gear. Couriers can pre-clear with a carnet if you're bringing a full camera kit; without one, expect a day of delay at DXB.
Five days out. Secure location releases. Indoor private venues need a signed release from the property; public locations (Downtown, Marina, Jumeirah Beach) require a Dubai Film permit — free for under-5-person crews, paid for larger productions.
Three days out. Confirm generator hire if you're lighting outside. Dubai hire companies rent 20-40kVA generators from AED 800/day with fuel and driver.
Two days out. Confirm catering headcount, lock the call sheet, send directions with both the English address and Makani number (Dubai's unique building-level coordinate system — far more reliable than Google Maps for Al Quoz and Nad Al Hamar).
Day-of. Brief the security guard at the studio gate on expected arrivals. Confirm driver paperwork for anyone transporting talent. Run a pre-light 60 minutes before talent call.
Nothing on this list is complicated. All of it is forgettable. Keep it in the standing production template and the shoot-day stress drops by half.
